Why Is Love Central to the Greatest Commandment?
General
I have always found the emphasis on love in the Greatest Commandment interesting. Instead of focusing only on rules or religious rituals, the teaching places love at the center of a person's relationship with God and other people. The Greatest Commandment calls for wholehearted love toward God and extends that principle toward one's neighbor. This means love is presented as something that should influence attitudes and actions. It can involve compassion, service, forgiveness, patience, and generosity. I think this broader understanding helps explain why the commandment is frequently discussed when people study Christian ethics and the teachings of Jesus.
